Jack Williamson will not be attending; Frederik Pohl doesn't have a 'C'; the "new authors" readings aren't happening; and several classic authors who aren't alive anymore will be read by other authors. For example, Lord Dunsany will be read by Darrell Schweitzer. The Infobot News regrest the errors. Hugo Awards Update * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Michael Nelson Hugo Administrator, hugos@chicon.org Chicon 2000 Hugo Ceremony The Chicon 2000 Hugo Ceremony will take place on the Saturday evening of Chicon at 8:00 p.m. in the Fairmont Hotel's Imperial Ballroom, on the lower level of the hotel. The Fairmont is directly south of the Hyatt Regency, across a narrow street with little traffic. We'll even have a human chain of gophers pointing the way. The Hugo and Campbell Award winners will be published in a special edition of the Chicon 2000 Daily Newsletter and posted to our web site immediately after the ceremony. Hugo Badge Ribbons Show your pride in helping to select this year's Hugo and Campbell Awards. At Chicon, I will have "Hugo Awards Voter" badge ribbons for everyone who participated in the Hugo and Campbell Awards nomination or voting process. Check the daily newsletter to find out how to pick up your ribbon during Chicon. Hugo Awards Update, 21-Aug-2000. The ballot counting has been completed and the engraved brass plates for the awards have been ordered. I've been told by Team Hugo that I'm hosting the Hugo Ceremony if Harry Turtledove doesn't show up. I hope they were kidding... but I better go out and shop for a tux this weekend. It's been a lot of fun administrating the Hugo Awards this year. I'm looking forward to attending the Hugo Awards Ceremony on September 2nd and meeting the nominees in person. If you have any comments on the Hugo Awards system, I suggest you plan to attend this panel: Revamping the Hugos Thursday - 17:30 to 18:45 Room: Regency B Participants: Leah Zeldes Smith (M), Steve Miller, Vince Docherty, Michael Nelson, Chris Barkley Do the Hugos need to be revamped for the coming 21st century? Panelists give their opinions. You can also send your comments to Saul Jaffe, next year's Hugo Administrator, care of the 2001 Worldcon, the Millennium Philcon, at phil2001@netaxs.com . Alexandra Digital Literature will be discontinuing their Hugo nominee story package after Chicon 2000. See you in Chicago! The Muppets Use Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) The Center for Voting and Democracy has an amusing demonstration of what they term Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) using the Muppets. This demo describes the same sort of voting method used for the Hugo and John W. Campbell Awards. Hugo Gophers * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Leann Runyanwood, hugo.gophers@chicon.org We're looking for help directing people to the Hugos on Saturday, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. It's easy duty -- you just stand in one place and when people come up to you, you point towards the next gopher down the line. Please write to Leann Runyanwood, at hugo.gophers@chicon.org and tell her you saw the notice in the Infobot News. WSFS Meeting: Call for Motions * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Kevin Standlee, motions@chicon.org If you have a motion you plan to submit to the WSFS Business Meeting this year and can send it to me in electronic form by the end of the day on MONDAY, AUGUST 28, I will incorporate it into the agenda for the meeting. That way, you will not have to go make 200 copies of it yourself and we can cut down on the number of loose pieces of paper. Technically, you must also submit a copy of the proposal signed by the maker and seconders to the head table staff before the motion can be considered, but you don't have to make 200 copies of that if you get electronic copy to me by next Monday. Besides plain text, I can accept attachments as MS Word files, RTF, or anything that Word can open. I ask that when indicating changes, you use strikethru type to indicate deletions and underline type to indicate additions. Comments not part of a motion but intended to be printed with it can be in italic type. Motions should be sent to motions@chicon.org by Monday, 28-Aug-2000. Guest of Honor Book * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Publications, pubs@chicon.org The Guest of Honor publication is a 40 page, double-sided book modeled on the old Ace doubles. It is the same format and size as the Progress Reports. Side 1 contains an original story written for this publication, "Grandfather Sam" by Dr. Ben Bova and an original story written for this publication by Harry Turtledove, "A Different Vein" along with an article, "The Four Stages of Fandom" by Dr. Bob Passovoy, and several pages of Excerpts from Anne and Bob Passovoy's All Star Fannish Cookbook, edited by Robin Passovoy with artwork by Joe Mayhew. The middle piece is a Baen books ad drawn by Bob Eggleton. I call the ad, Toni the BEM, or as Steve Silver said when he saw it, "Toni the Cthulhu!" The other side is "The Bob Eggleton Sketch Book - to color." Covers of both sides have color artwork and color headings and titles like an old Ace double including the garish yellows and reds and bright blues. The cover of the story side has a habitat satelite in space. The cover of the sketch book side has a dinosauroid in a space suit. The first page, inside in each direction, also has a color drawing by Bob Eggleton. One inside page is a small dinosaur in a patch of roses - for the sketch book. The other is an original drawing by Bob of Ben Bova's character, Sam Gunn. All attending members get one copy with their registration packets. If they wish to purchase more, they may do so at sales-to-members for $1 including tax. Mexican Dance * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 9:00 PM, Sunday, 03-Sep-2000, Grand ABCD, Hyatt East Tower If you're into Hispanic folk music or salsa dancing, join us at the Mexican Dance. Our band will be Chicago's premier Mexican folk music group, the Sones de Mexico Ensemble . They've been together since 1994, and specialize in *son*, a rich and lively Mexican music tradition. Over twenty-five folk string, percussion, and wind instruments are featured by this versatile quintet, which also offers intricate four-part vocal arrangements and acrobatic dance demonstrations. The group recreates the atmosphere of a traditional fandango (dance fiesta), where the most colorful, joyous, and upbeat *sones* are played and danced until sunrise. The group's cross-cultural view of music links *son* to the diverse ethnic roots of Mexico's mestizo culture: Native American, Spanish, and the often overlooked African influences in Mexican music. Gaming Questions * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Beryl Turner, gaming@chicon.org Q. "Where do I go to get a gaming schedule?" A.1. Registration. "If I get there and want to find three other people that play double deck Pinochle/Mad Cow Poker/D&D/Magic - how would I arrange it?" A. There will be "WannaGame?" boards up at the Swiss. Anyone wanting to arrange a "pick up game" will be able to post it there with room, time and day info. Kaffeeklatsch Update * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Sign up at Information. The Kaffee Klatsches are scheduled on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday between 10:00 AM and 6:45 PM and between 11:30 AM and 12:45 PM on Monday. Each Kaffee Klatsch has room for 10 participants and 2 alternates. We will attempt to fit the alternates in even if averyone shows up, but can make no guarantees. Because there may be as many as six thousand fans in attendance, signing up in advance is definitely required. To help make the Kaffee Klatsches available to the largest number of fans the sign up sheets will be made available on a daily basis, rather than all at once. The sign up sheets will be available at the Information Desk in front of the Regency Ballrooms (Hyatt West Tower Ballroom Level). Friday's sheets will be available starting at Noon on Thursday. Saturday's sheets will be available starting at 9:30 AM Friday. Both Sunday and Monday's sheets will be available starting at 9:30 AM on Saturday. To help make the sign up process fair to everyone, we want you to sign up for yourself only -- In other words you can't sign up for yourself and all your friends. You will need your badge number to sign up but then, you need your badge for pretty much everything at Chicon. (Special note for the time-impaired -- If you want to go to two Kaffee Klatches that are scheduled at the same time, you have to pick one of them: You can't sign up for both!) We hate to have so many rules, but we want to give EVERYONE a chance! Parking Alternatives * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Tom Veal, chair@chicon.org All three hotels have parking decks under them, but they aren't cheap -- it will cost you $30 a night, unless you are a member staying at the Hyatt or Swissotel, in which case, it will cost you $15 a night. This is quite a deal for Downtown Chicago. Lots of cars come to downtown Chicago every day, so there are lots of parking garages. Unfortunately, it takes longer to build a garage than a car, so the market clearing price for parking is rather high by the standards of everywhere except New York. With the Chicon discount, hotel parking rates for members staying at the Hyatt Regency Chicago and the Swissotel are pretty cheap for the Loop. The rest of you may wish to take the following tour. Start at the corner of Michigan and Wacker, and drive east. First up to your right is the One Illinois Center garage (111 E. Wacker) ($20 for 12-24 hours). If you want to look for something better, turn right on North Columbus Drive and take the downward ramp (a right turn just in front of the Fairmont). Wind your way down to Middle Columbus Drive, going south. The 303 East Wacker Garage, on your left, charges $17 for 12 to 24 hours. If you continue straight on the same level, you will see a large, narrow "Parking" sign to your right, which points toward the Aon Center and Prudential Plaza garages. Their 12 to 24 hour rates are no better than what you've already seen ($20.50 at Aon Center, $17.50 at Prudential Plaza), but each has a weekend/holiday rate that applies from 4:00 p.m. on Friday to 8:30 a.m. on the next business day. During those periods, Aon Center charges $9.75 per 24 hours (or fraction thereof), while Prudential Plaza's rate is $9.00 per 24 hours. Instead of going straight after passing the 303 East Wacker Garage, you can twist your way down to the lowest level, where you will come to the Family Golf Centers lot (entrance on Lower Columbus). This is an outdoor lot and is closed from 8:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m., but it charges only $8.75 per day and, being outside, can accommodate trucks and full-sized vans. If the FGC lot is full or inexplicably closed (as happens once in a while), turn west onto the lowest level of South Water Street, which will take you past the Michigan Plaza (202-205 South Michigan) Garage. (You will need to pass it and make a u-turn in order to enter.) The 12 to 24 hour rate here is $17.00, and the weekend/holiday 24-hour rate is $10.00. There is an outside lot for trucks, and the garage entrance clearance is 9' 6". This lot and that are Family Golf Centers are the only ones described here that can handle anything taller than a minivan.
