Hugo Ceremony Volunteers Hugo Voting Update Latest from the Art Show Film Program Remaining Deadlines Service Marks You are Essential! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Volunteers are essential to any convention. Without the help of volunteers the convention simply wouldn't happen at all. Everyone you see working for the convention is a volunteer. This even includes the convention staff and a great many of the guests who are giving their time and energy to see that you have a good time. All of the departments such as Convention Services, Hospitality, Registration and Programming are staffed exclusively with volunteers. All of the events such as the Dances, the Masquerade, the Art Show, Video and a great many of the panels depend upon volunteer labor. No one gets paid for this, we do it out of love ... love of Science Fiction and Fantasy, love of costuming, music, art and fun. Volunteering is the easiest way to meet people with interests like your own. If you like art, sign up for a shift in the art show. You'll meet other people who like art too. If you want a close-up view of the "Dune" mini-series promo and other exhibits, offer to help set up or tear down the Concourse. This is especially good if you're shy and find it hard to introduce yourself to others. People have made lifelong friends by working together as volunteers. Want to meet the Pros? Sign up for a shift in Hospitality, chances are they will stop in there for at least a little while. There is a special sense of satisfaction and self esteem that comes from contributing something to an event like a Con, and you get some even more tangible benefits if you volunteer. You get to learn new things and make new friends. You will also get an invite to the special volunteer party after the convention. Remember, it takes a lot of work to put on an event like this and we need all the help we can get. While it's true that if everyone who attended the convention signed up for just one volunteer shift we wouldn't have enough jobs to go around, it is also true that we never seem to get enough volunteers. If you enjoy Cons, show your appreciation by putting something back into them. Take two hours out of your weekend and sign up for a volunteer shift. Just go to the Volunteer Desk in the Hyatt Skyway Suites and ask where and when they need volunteers. And remember, without your help, we wouldn't be here for you. [Courtesy of the Klingon Diplomatic Corps - I.C.B.] Hugo Ceremony Volunteers * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Michael Nelson, Hugo Administrator, hugos@chicon.org People wishing to join Team Hugo (the folks in Chicon's Events Division running the Hugo Ceremony) should submit a Chicon 2000 volunteer form. Select "Hugo Award Ceremony" under areas of interest. Hugo Voting Update * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Michael Nelson, Hugo Administrator, hugos@chicon.org I wish to thank everyone who took the time to vote for the Hugo Awards. As of 3 a.m. Eastern Standard Time 01-Aug-2000, there were 476 electronic ballots cast. I won't know the total number of ballots until all the July 31st postmarked paper ballots arrive. But right now, I have slightly over 900 ballots. I was expecting about 800 ballots. So, congratulations! I may have to order more Hugo Awards Voter badge ribbons. And our mighty polling computers have some preliminary results... there will be some winners and some losers (but it's still an great honor to be nominated). Attend the Chicon 2000 Hugo Awards Ceremony on Saturday, September 2nd to find out who won. Some Comments from the Ballots: "It would have been nice if you could have voted for the Hugos online." To paraphrase a quote from a movie that almost made it onto this year's Hugo ballot, "Throw us a frigging bone here!" You had to at least visit the Chicon 2000 web site if you wanted to vote online. Seriously, Chicon 2000 is the first Worldcon to offer the option of making Hugo Awards nominations and votes electronically. We did have a slow start since the electronic forms are considered to only be supplements to the paper forms. As we were developing the forms, our webmasters (Chaz Boston Baden and Erik V. Olson) would e-mail me and ask me to check the draft e-form. A few days later, I would write back and say something like, "It's perfect -- could you add some spinning rocket GIFs and blinking text?" Next thing you know, weeks had gone by. And I never did get any spinning rockets. If you liked being able to nominate and vote online, send a note to the 2001 Millennium Philcon and 2002 ConJose' Hugo Administrators [phil2001@netaxs.com and ConJose@sfsfc.org] and let them know. "How could you possibly not have Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace on the Hugo ballot!" Ah... because it sucked? The simple reason why [fill in the blank] did not get on the ballot is because not enough people nominated it. Did you take the time to nominate Jar Jar, Mr. Jedi Boy? As Worldcon members, you hold the power to dictate what will appear on the Hugo ballot. And next year, you get to tell the Millennium Philcon what you want on the 2001 Hugo ballot -- even if you're not a member of the 2001 Worldcon. But if you nominate Battlefield Earth, I won't be your friend anymore. A list of the top twenty nominees in each category will be published along with the list of winners after the Hugo Awards Ceremony and posted to the Chicon 2000 at-con web site. Latest from the Art Show * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Because we were later than usual getting information out about the Chicon 2000 Art Show, we'll be accepting mail-in reservations for space until Monday, August 28th. Sending in your reservation earlier is still better, since we're purchasing new panels to hang the artwork on and we may have trouble getting more panels on short notice if there's a sudden flood of reservations at the last minute. To accommodate those artists who are unable -- for some reason -- to make a reservation in advance, we plan to purchase enough panels to allow for limited walk-ins, up until the entire physical space of the Art Show is full. We don't recommend coming as a walk-in, because there's no guarantee that there will be space, but we'll do what we can to get you in. Finally -- and we're all banging our heads against the wall with frustration about this -- Todd's e-mail client is periodically dropping some of the e-mails that you send him. It will be replaced by Tuesday, August 1st, but if you've sent Todd e-mail recently and haven't received a reply after waiting a week, please try e-mailing him again. We apologize for the inconvenience. It *will* be fixed. Todd Cameron Hamilton Chicon 2000 Art Show 1220 S. As of now (01-Aug-2000) I have already received more than 50 requests for space on the bus. Just about everyone that has written to me before 31-Jul-2000 should be able to go. I will contact everyone personally in the next few days to confirm that thay can go, as the tentative time for the tour had changed from the first posting. We have, at Fermilab's request, limited the tour to 50 people -- that's the max that they want to work with. We had a couple of requests to have school age kids go on the tour. I haven't heard back from my contact at FNAL about this -- I will update everyone that has asked about this as soon as I know. Dr. Tom LeCompte will be heading the tour, with the assistance of Fermilab docents for some of the tour. Dr. LeCompte was kind enough to reprise his role as tour guide -- he also did the tour for Chicon V -- he's coming back from CERN early to host the tour. Please let him know when you see him at Fermilab how much we appreciate this. The tentative schedule is this: Depart from the HYATT at 1:30pm (1330) on Friday, 01-Sep-2000. The tour is scheduled to start at 3:00pm (1500), and go for two hours. We will be back at the Hyatt as soon as traffic allows -- remember, this is a Friday Rush Hour in Chicago, and it's Labor Day Weekend -- so if you need to be somewhere at 6:00pm, your chances of making it are very slim (read none). We need to be back by 7:30pm, or we're overtime on the bus..... FNAL is 40+ miles from the Hyatt, as the bus drives.... If anyone has any questions. please contact me at condiments@chicon.org.
